The RCMP wishes to advise Canadian citizens and businesses to beware of attempts by some to benefit from the death of an RCMP officer. Solicitations can occur in person, by telephone or by email. As is the case with all charity scams, the public is urged to exercise due caution.
"Unfortunately we know from past experience that unscrupulous people may try to profit from the pain and suffering of others by approaching well-meaning Canadians for donations
" says National Executive member S/Sgt. Brian Roach.
To file a police complaint, contact your local police force. To ensure that your complaint information is shared with other law enforcement agencies, also file a report with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (formerly PhoneBusters) by calling 1-888-495-8501.
All registered Canadian charities are listed on the Canada Revenue Agency Web site .
