Alberta RCMP Statement: Right to peaceful assembly and demonstration

September 23, 2020
Edmonton, Alberta

Statement

All Albertans have the right to peaceful assembly and demonstration. The Alberta RCMP is a neutral party that ensures all Albertans' rights are upheld. In the event of an unlawful act that threatens the physical safety of the demonstrators and the general public, the RCMP will take measured steps to ensure that those who unlawfully interfere with or threaten the safety of any person or property will be held accountable in accordance with the laws of Canada.

Disruptive behaviour and crude language are not actions that would be considered unlawful acts. Our members have to constantly balance the rights of citizens to demonstrate and the rights of citizens to feel safe in their community. An investigation into the hit and run was opened on Sept. 10, 2020 and Ponoka RCMP have asked for anyone with video evidence to provide it. Alberta RCMP will continue to investigate any allegations of violence.
