Athabasca RCMP investigation into injuries incidental to arrest referred to ASIRT

On Oct. 21, 2020, at approximately 3:00 p.m., Athabasca RCMP responded to a call for service outside a residence in Calling Lake involving a 29-year old female who was reported to be intoxicated and acting strangely.

Upon police arrival, the situation escalated and the officer attempted to place the female under arrest. During the arrest, a confrontation occurred between the officer and the female, during which force was used. The female and officer sustained injuries during the incident.

The female was transported to local hospital for medical examination by police and later transported to an Edmonton area hospital for additional medical care in stable condition.

The Director of Law Enforcement has been notified and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the actions of the police during this investigation.
