News release

Corner Brook RCMP responded to the report of a fishing vessel that ran aground on an island near Cox' Cove this morning. One man is deceased.

At approximately 6:45 a.m., police received the report. The vessel, carrying a crew of eight based out of Curling, ran aground on Eagle Island.

The Maritime Rescue Sub-Center in St. John's dispatched the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Cape Fox, from Lark Harbour, which attended the scene. A CH-149 Cormorant helicopter from Gander was also tasked, but due to the speed in which local fishers assisted the distressed vessel, it was stood down before launching. The crew were transported onto another vessel and removed from the scene. The remaining crew were reported to be uninjured.

Transport Canada, Occupational Health and Safety Division of Service NL and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are engaged. The investigation is continuing.
