On Saturday, October 17, 2020 at approximately 1:00 a.m., a 35 year-old Charlottetown man was stopped at the COVID checkpoint at the Confederation Bridge in Borden-Carleton. The man did not have a valid drivers license when asked and the staff at the checkpoint suspected that he was impaired and phoned the East Prince RCMP.
The RCMP arrived to the scene and confirmed that he was impaired and arrested him and transported him to the East Prince Detachment where he provided samples of his breath more than 2.5 times the legal limit. His vehicle was towed and impounded and he was later released from custody under safe circumstances and is scheduled to appear in court in November.
Later that same day at approximately 10:30 p.m., staff at the COVID checkpoint phoned the RCMP once again and reported that there was a suspended driver at the checkpoint. The RCMP attended and issued the driver a ticket for driving while suspended.
RCMP are grateful for the staff at the COVID checkpoint, assisting to make the roads in PEI safe and thank them for their help. There are too many people driving while with no licenses and/or while impaired. If everyone in PEI could follow this great example to report drivers who break the law, you could be saving a life.
