Man charged with aggravated assault and forcible confinement

A 56-year-old man from Elgin, N.B., has been charged with several serious offences, in connection with the alleged aggravated assault and forcible confinement of a woman.

On December 5, 2020, members of the Caledonia Region detachment responded to a home on Gowland Mountain Road for a wellbeing check. Upon arrival, police found a 56-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman, both injured. The man was arrested and taken to hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. He was later released from hospital and was remanded into custody. The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene.

On December 9, 56-year-old James Steeves was charged with the following offences:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Forcible confinement
  • Sexual assault
  • Uttering threats
  • Overcoming resistance to the commission of an indictable offence

He was remanded into custody pending a bail hearing on December 23, 2020, at 1:30 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing.
