Man charged with uttering threats and firearm offences

Eskasoni RCMP have charged a 26-year-old man with multiple threats and firearm offences following an incident yesterday in Eskasoni.

At approximately 3:16 a.m. on July 11, RCMP responded to a disturbance involving a group of people on the roadway at Sugar Maple Lane. Police determined that a man with a gun had drove up to the group, threatened and yelled obscenities while pointing a firearm at them. The man then drove a short distance, got out of the vehicle and ran off into a wooded area.

RCMP, with assistance from Cape Breton Regional Police, searched and located the suspect at a residence on Pine St. He was arrested without incident. An unloaded firearm was seized from the vehicle.

Victor Joseph Herney, of Eskasoni, is facing the following charges:

  • Pointing a Firearm x 4
  • Careless Use of Firearm
  • Use Firearm in Commission of Offence
  • Possess Prohibited Weapon
  • Unauthorized Possession in Motor Vehicle
  • Possess Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Contravention of Storage Regulations
  • Tampering with Serial Number
  • Uttering Threats x 4
  • Failure to Comply with Undertaking x 3
  • Failure to Comply with Order
  • Failure to Comply with Probation Order

Herney is scheduled to appear in Sydney Provincial Court on July 13.

The investigation is ongoing.
