Port Saunders RCMP is investigating a vessel fire that happened at the Port Saunders Marine Service Centre on September 15, 2020.
At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening, police responded to the report, attended the scene and observed a large commercial fishing vessel on fire in the water. The vessel was fully engulfed in flames and posed serious risk to surrounding vessels and the government wharf.
Port Saunders Volunteer Fire Department attempted to extinguish the blaze while several local fishermen towed the vessel away from the wharf and other vessels.
The fire on the fishing boat could not be extinguished resulting in a total loss. Minor damage was sustained to three other vessels and an area of the government wharf. No one was injured during the incident and the cause of the fire, which is not believed to be suspicious, remains under investigation.
Police are liaising with Port Saunders Harbour Authority, the Canadian Coast Guard and the Office of the Fire Commissioner as the investigation continues.
