Portage la Prairie RCMP respond to threats at high school

On September 16, 2020, at approximately 11:00 am, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a call from an unknown person who made a number of serious threats towards the Portage Collegiate Institute.

An officer, already in the school on an unrelated matter, was notified of the threats and asked that the school be placed on lockdown.

Multiple resources were immediately deployed to ensure the safety of students and staff, including a number of officers from the Portage la Prairie detachment as well as Police Dog Services who attended with a certified explosives detection dog.

A thorough search of the area was completed by officers and Police Dog Services with no suspicious persons or items being located. Following the search, the lockdown was lifted.

During the investigation two people were detained and questioned, but released when it was determined that they were not involved.

The RCMP is continuing its investigation and is now focussing on identifying the caller.
