RCMP NL continues enforcement of high speeders during Labour Day Weekend

Five more drivers were removed from the roadway over the Labour Day weekend by RCMP NL for excessive speeding. Officers observed speeds as high as 84 km/hr above the posted speed limit.

At approximately 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 4, Roddickton RCMP observed a Dodge Ram pickup truck driving at a dangerously high rate of speed along Route 432 near Main Brook. The vehicle's speed was obtained, using radar, as 144 km/hr in the 60 km/hr speed zone, 84 km/hr above the posted speed limit. Police conducted a traffic stop and the driver, an 18-year old Main Brook man, was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for the excessive speed and his licence was suspended.

On Sunday Bay St. George RCMP located two excessive speeders. The first one was found at approximately 10:15 a.m. in Stephenville. Police observed a vehicle traveling along Carolina Avenue at a high rate of speed. A radar reading was obtained as 120 km/hr in a 40 km/hr speed zone, 80 km/hr above the posted speed limit. The second was located at approximately 2:30 p.m. Police observed a vehicle traveling 134 km/hr in a posted 80 km/hr speed zone on Route 490 near Stephenville Crossing. Traffic stops were conducted and the drivers, a 46-year-old man from Nova Scotia and a 29-year-old Stephenville Crossing man, respectively, were charged under the Highway Traffic Act for the excessive speeds. Police issued driver's licence suspensions to both and their cars were seized and impounded.

Later that same day, at approximately 7:00 p.m., an officer with Traffic Service East was on patrol on the Trans-Canada Highway (TCH) near Butter Pot Park and observed a vehicle travelling at speeds as high as 159 km/hr. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver, a 16-year-old Torbay youth, was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for the excessive speed. His licence was suspended and the truck was seized and impounded.

On Monday, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Grand Falls-Windsor RCMP were on patrol on the TCH near Bishops Falls and observed a vehicle traveling 157 km/hr. Police conducted a traffic stop and the driver, a 57-year-old Grand Falls-Windsor man, was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for excessive speeding. His licence was suspended and his car was seized and impounded.
