RCMP police officer charged with firearms offences

Constable Levi Bennett, stationed at Whitbourne Detachment, was arrested today and charged with multiple firearms offences stemming from an incident at his home on November 5 which required police response. At no time was any threat to the public identified.

Following an investigation overseen by SIRT-NL, the following charges have been laid:

  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm (two counts)
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Mr. Bennett has been released from custody with multiple conditions and will appear in court on January 13, 2021. There continues to be no public safety threat identified. As per RCMP policy, he has been suspended with pay.
