Two men charged with aggravated assault of fellow inmate

A 38-year-old man and 29-year-old man, both originally from Nova Scotia, have each been charged with two counts of aggravated assault in connection with an incident at the Atlantic Institution in Renous, N.B.

On September 26, 2020, members of the Blackville RCMP received a report from Correctional Service of Canada that a 28-year-old man was assaulted by two fellow inmates. The victim was badly injured and transported to hospital.

On December 7, James Bernard Melvin and Morgan James McNeil were each charged with two counts of aggravated assault. They remain in custody and are scheduled to appear in Miramichi Provincial Court on February 25, 2021.

The victim remains in hospital with serious but what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
