Media Advisory

In the interest of promoting traffic safety in Iqaluit, the Iqaluit RCMP would like to remind drivers of their duty to remain at the scene of a collision.

Section 259 and Section 260 of the Nunavut Traffic Safety Act requires anyone involved in a collision, including collisions with pedestrians and unattended vehicles, to remain at the scene, and give assistance to anyone injured as a result of the collision. Any drivers involved are also required to report the collision, and provide the required information, including a driver's license, insurance, and registration, to a member of the RCMP. Collisions can be reported by either contacting the RCMP at 867-979-0123 (business hours) or 867-979-1111 (after hours), or by attending to the Iqaluit RCMP Detachment and completing a Motor Vehicle Collision Report, as soon as possible, following the collision.

Driver's who fail to remain at or report a collision may be fined up to $5000, and/or arrested under the Traffic Safety Act, or the Criminal Code.

The RCMP is committed to traffic safety in Iqaluit, and encourages all drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution, be alert to your surroundings, and never drive while impaired. The RCMP urges Iqaluit residents to use a designated driver, call a cab, or stay overnight if they have consumed drugs or alcohol.

On behalf of the Iqaluit RCMP, please enjoy a safe and happy holidays!
