Over the past several weeks, Halifax District RCMP has responded to motor vehicle-pedestrian collisions occurring in the early evening. With darkness coming on more quickly with each passing day, we want to remind motorists and pedestrians of a few safety tips:
Drivers:
- Be alert at all times, and especially when approaching a crosswalk.
- Yield the right of way to pedestrians in a crosswalk, whether it's marked or unmarked.
- Follow posted speed limits, particularly in school zones and near playgrounds.
- Ensure your windshield is clean and clear.
Pedestrians:
- Look both ways before crossing the street, and make eye contact with approaching drivers whenever possible.
- Use a marked crosswalk if available.
- Never dart out into traffic between parked cars.
- Make sure you can see drivers, and they can see you.
- Wear brightly coloured and/or reflective clothing,
- especially at night or in poor weather.
- Activate the crosswalk signals where available.
Do your part. Stay alert and be safe!
