News release

The New Brunswick RCMP has arrested three people in connection with several ongoing theft investigations in the Codiac and Southeastern New Brunswick areas.

Between July 9 and July 15, 2021, RCMP received dozens of reports of copper wire and catalytic converter thefts in the Moncton and surrounding areas, including Shediac, Petitcodiac and River Glade. In one incident on July 9, police received a report of two high-mast light poles and junction boxes that were broken into on the Trans-Canada highway in River Glade. The lights were stripped of their copper wiring, rendering them inoperable. Police also responded to multiple other complaints from businesses and homes in the area.

A coordinated RCMP response was implemented, involving members of the Southeast Crime Reduction Unit, Caledonia Detachment and Codiac Regional RCMP.

On July 15, 2021, police stopped a vehicle travelling on the Trans-Canada Highway near exit 450 in Moncton as part of the ongoing investigations. Three people were arrested at the scene. A 27-year-old woman from Dieppe and a 32-year-old man from Salisbury were later released pending a future court appearance. A 31-year-old man from Dieppe was remanded into custody on an unrelated matter. Eight catalytic converters were recovered from the vehicle. Police are continuing to investigate where the catalytic converters came from, and whether the individuals arrested are connected to the recent thefts in the area.

The investigation is ongoing.
