Halifax District RCMP has arrested a youth for failing to stop for police and for having stolen property.
On January 1, a member of Halifax District RCMP saw an SUV speeding on Sackville Dr. in Lower Sackville. After seeing the SUV swerve into the next lane twice, the member turned on his emergency equipment to stop the SUV.
The SUV eventually stopped in a parking lot near Cobequid Rd. As the member approached to speak to the driver, the vehicle accelerated quickly and turned onto Cobequid Rd.
The member then drove down Cobequid Rd. and saw a vehicle stopped on an intersecting street, Fultz House Ln. Someone was standing next to the vehicle. As the member approached, he was able to confirm that it was the same vehicle he had interacted with earlier.
The member yelled at the male driver to show his hands, but the driver did not cooperate and instead fled into the woods. A short time later, police located the driver and he was arrested without incident.
The investigation revealed that the driver had been involved in a collision after failing to negotiate a turn and striking a sign. The licence plate attached to the SUV was also determined to be stolen.
The driver, a 17-year-old from Dartmouth, is facing charges of Flight from Police, Resist Arrest and Possession of Stolen Property. He was also issued several tickets under the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act. He is schedule to appear in Halifax Provincial Court on January 28.
