Tipi in front of Alberta RCMP headquarters building

On June 21, 2022, Alberta RCMP recognized National Indigenous Peoples Day with a Tipi Raising ceremony in front of the headquarters building. Corresponding with the summer solstice, National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrates the unique heritage, diverse cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. The date of June 21 is a significant time where many Indigenous Peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near to this day for generations.

In many communities, this day also turns into a weeklong celebration of Indigenous Peoples and culture. The Tipi in front of headquarters was raised by Nehiyaw/Cree Traditional knowledge keeper Jamie John, Jason Williams and Kimowan Weaslehead Kehewin, who provided Tipi Teaching about the setup. The Alberta RCMP will also be having an activity to honour Indigenous culture for staff later in the week. Throughout the year, we will have tributes for the many contributions of Indigenous peoples and continue to educate our staff and recognize our commitment and journey as a community to reconciliation.

The Alberta RCMP provide policing services to 38 First Nation communities, 8 Métis Settlements and thousands of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples who live in urban centers across the province.

"Our work with, and for, Indigenous communities is important to us on National Indigenous Peoples Day and every day," said Inspector Kimberly Mueller of Indigenous Policing Services. "It is our goal to keep listening and continue our open dialogue and collaboration as we celebrate the culture, heritage, and value of Indigenous Peoples in Alberta."

The Alberta RCMP remains focused on continuing our efforts towards Reconciliation with ongoing dialogue, healing, learning, and moving forward in partnership with the Indigenous peoples and communities in this province.
