Construction for the new Burin Peninsula RCMP District Detachment in Marystown was officially launched today with a groundbreaking at the site in Marystown. Assistant Commissioner Jennifer Ebert, Commanding Officer of RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador, was joined by community representatives, elected officials and RCMP NL employees and partners for the event. The $12 million build is cost shared with 70% funded by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and 30% by the Government of Canada.

"It's such a pleasure to visit the Burin Peninsula for this important milestone in the establishment of a new Detachment for the District," said Assistant Commissioner Ebert. "The new modern building being constructed will better meet the needs of our employees and the communities we serve, while also representing the strong commitment of the RCMP to the region."

The existing Detachment in Marystown was constructed 38 years ago and no longer meets RCMP standards, with deficiencies in space and functionality. The new Detachment will be built directly behind the existing one on McGettigan Boulevard in Marystown. Features of the new 1197-square-meter Net Zero Carbon building will include state-of-the-art thermal design and energy efficient lighting and plumbing systems. The Detachment will also include a fully functional cell pavilion with secure cells, a breath-testing and fingerprinting area, and a secure bay for prisoner transfers.

The RCMP Atlantic Region Project management office, in conjunction with EXP Consultants, designed the building. Construction is being led by the Regional RCMP Strategic Planning and Project Management Office located in St. John's, with Marco Group as the successful bidder for the construction.

The anticipated completion date is November 2023.
