News release

Thirty-nine-year-old Marcel Marche is currently in custody following a motor vehicle collision that occurred in Port au Port on March 11, 2022.

At approximately 7:20 p.m. on Friday, Bay St. George RCMP responded to the report of a two-vehicle collision on the Main Road. When officers arrived on the scene, a couple was located in one vehicle and the other vehicle was empty. A short distance away, police located the driver of that vehicle, Marcel Marche, who was walking away on foot. He showed signs of alcohol impairment and was informed of his arrest. Marche became aggressive, attacked the officer and assaulted him. The officer deployed a taser and Marche continued to resist his arrest. The two were in a physical altercation and the officer was eventually able to take Marche into custody. Marche, the officer and a passenger of the other vehicle were transported to Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville for the treatment of minor injuries.

While at the hospital, Marche refused a blood demand and assaulted a second officer. He was treated and released from the hospital into the custody of police. He attended court on Saturday, was remanded into custody. His next court appearance is on March 15, 2022.

He is charged with the following criminal offences:

  • Assault on police officer causing bodily harm
  • Assault on a police officer
  • Two counts of uttering threats
  • Resist arrest
  • Refusing to comply with a blood demand

Bay St. George RCMP thanks those at the scene who assisted police with the investigation.
