News release

Halifax District RCMP laid over 150 Motor Vehicle Act charges and charged 10 impaired drivers during Canada Road Safety Week (CRSW), which ran May 17-23.

CRSW, an initiative led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, is intended to save lives and reduce injuries on our roads.

"Canada Road Safety Week is an opportunity for police in the Halifax Regional Municipality to work together to reinforce the importance of safe driving," says Cpl. Guillaume Tremblay of the Nova Scotia RCMP. "Road safety impacts everyone and it continues to be a priority for Halifax District RCMP."

During the week, the following enforcement actions were taken:

  • 10 impaired drivers were charged
  • 50 drivers were charge for aggressive driving offences including speeding or stunting
  • 4 drivers were charged for distracted driving
  • 97 drivers were charged for various other traffic offences (e.g., driving without insurance; failure to obey provincial road rules)

If you see dangerous driving, report it to police when it's safe to do so. It's helpful to include the location and description of the vehicle (including license plate number, colour, make and model), its direction of travel and a description of the driver.
