Man arrested and charged following shooting incident in Esgenoôpetitj First Nation

A 27-year-old man from Esgenoôpetitj First Nation has been arrested and charged following a shooting incident in the community.

On June 2, 2022, at approximately 1:15 p.m., members of the Neguac RCMP responded to a report of a disturbance at a home on Algonquin Road in Esgenoôpetitj First Nation. When police arrived, they found a 36-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound, and the suspect had fled the scene. The 36-year-old man was transported to hospital by Ambulance New Brunswick with what were believed to be life-threatening injuries.

At the time, the incident was believed to be isolated and did not meet the criteria for an Alert Ready message.

As part of the investigation, police located a prohibited weapon and identified a 27-year-old man in connection with the shooting incident. At approximately 3:45 p.m., police arrested the man in a wooded area near Condo Court in the community without further incident.

Dylan Dedam, from Esgenoôpetitj First Nation, appeared in Miramichi Provincial Court on June 3 and was charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and was remanded into custody. He is scheduled to return to court on June 7 at 1:30 p.m. for a bail hearing.

"We want to take a moment to thank the community of Esgenoôpetitj First Nation for their cooperation during this incident," says Sgt. Jason LeBlanc with the Neguac RCMP. "Public safety is always our top concern. The New Brunswick RCMP is always ready to issue an Alert Ready message should there be a need or there is an immediate risk to public safety."

The Northeast District RCMP Crime Reduction Unit is leading the ongoing investigation, with assistance from the RCMP Major Crime Unit. The RCMP Police Dog Services as well as Peace Officers from the Department of Justice and Public Safety assisted during the police response to the incident.

The investigation is continuing.
