Man facing 14 additional charges after pointing a firearm at two persons, including a police officer

A 62-year-old man from Maisonette, N.B. has been charged with 14 additional offences following an incident involving pointing a firearm in the community.

Marcel Gauvin appeared in Bathurst Provincial Court on April 25 and was charged with pointing a firearm. On April 28, 2022, Marcel Gauvin returned to court and was charged with the following additional charges:

  • pointing a firearm
  • threaten to assault a police officer with a weapon
  • dangerous operation of a conveyance
  • assault with a weapon
  • assaulting a police officer with a weapon
  • flight from a police officer
  • uttering threats to cause bodily harm
  • use of a firearm in the commission of an offence
  • two counts of careless use of a firearm
  • possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
  • unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle

These charges stem from an incident that occurred on April 24, 2022, when members of the Caraquet RCMP responded to a report of a disturbance at a home on Rue des Chalets in Maisonette. Police received information that a man had pointed a firearm at someone, and had fled the scene in a vehicle.

The incident concluded when the man was located near a wooded area on Highway 134. The man surrendered to police and was arrested without incident. Subsequent to the arrest, police seized an unsecured firearm as well as ammunition.

The investigation is ongoing.
