News release

The parent of an unsupervised youth, who was operating a dirt bike in Lumsden on October 14, 2022, was ticketed by New-Wes-Valley RCMP.

Shortly after 5:00 p.m. on Friday, police received a report of a youth operating a dirt bike on the Main Road in Lumsden, while speeding and conducting wheelies. An officer attended the residence of the identified youth and ticketed a guardian under the Off-Road Vehicles Act, for permitting the operation of an off-road vehicle on a roadway without insurance and permitting the operation of an off-road vehicle without supervision.

RCMP NL reminds parents and guardians of the requirement under the Off-Road Vehicles Act for the proper supervision of youth who are under the age of 16 while operating off-road vehicles. Proper supervision means that the youth must see and be seen by the supervisor at all times.

So far in 2022, within areas policed by RCMP NL, eleven people have died during off-road vehicle incidents.
