Deer Lake, Newfoundland and Labrador

News release

Four snowmobilers reported missing to Deer Lake RCMP in the early morning, April 20, were located that afternoon, safe and uninjured.

The four men departed by snowmobile from Hawke's Bay on April 19 for a day trip to Harbour Deep and were expected to return that same evening. After not being seen or heard from in over 17 hours, police were contacted.

Upon receiving the report of the overdue snowmobilers, Deer Lake RCMP launched an immediate investigation and ground search and rescue efforts.

Deer Lake and Port Saunders Ground Search and Rescue Teams were engaged and deployed from Hawkes Bay and Jackson's Arm. The ground search efforts were complemented with an air search by a Royal Canadian Air Force Cormorant through the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre. Within a short period of time, all missing snowmobilers, who became lost due to poor weather conditions, were located.

This successful outcome was a result of a speedy response and cooperation of multiple agencies. The RCMP reminds the public to strongly consider the benefits of carrying alternative communication and GPS devices when traveling in areas of the province with limited cell service.
