RCMP have received several complaints from homeowners recently who suspect their snow removal and roofing contractors have scammed them.
"Doing research before doling out any money can help save a lot of problems down the road," says Cst. Gavin Moore, Media Relations Officer for the PEI RCMP.
If you're planning on engaging a contractor, check their reputation and customer service rating. Ask yourself the following questions before making a hire:
- Is the price too good to be true?
- How long have they been in business and what's their work history?
- Do they have the credentials to do the job?
- Do they have the required equipment, insurance and permits?
- Have you checked references?
Here are other tips to lessen the chances of being scammed:
- Get all agreements, including quotes, contracts and invoices, in writing – and keep everything.
- Know what you're paying for, and remember that using cash doesn't give you a permanent record.
- If a deposit is required, ask why – and don't hand over more than you're comfortable with, in the event you don't get the deposit back.
- Ask how the refund process works.
