New Brunswick, New Brunswick

News release

The New Brunswick RCMP is investigating multiple reports of theft of mail and damage to community mailboxes in various locations across New Brunswick.

Over the last few months, police have received numerous reports of community mailboxes that were forced open and the mail stolen. These damages and thefts appear to be happening in the evening and overnight hours, and have been reported in the Moncton, Saint John, Fredericton, and Oromocto regions, as well as other surrounding communities. Because of how widespread the reports have been, police believe there are several individuals involved.

"We working closely with Canada Post to find those responsible for these damages and thefts," says Cpl. Hans Ouellette with the New Brunswick RCMP. "You can help limit the impact of these incidents by making sure to collect your mail daily, especially if you are expecting a package or important letter. If you see any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, please report it to police."

Anyone with information about these incidents, who sees suspicious activity near community mailboxes or who may have recently been a victim of mail theft is asked to contact their local police. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or by Secure Web Tips at www.crimenb.ca.

Canada Post offers further information and specific services to help people protect themselves from mail theft on their website.
