Saskatchewan RCMP – Your Provincial Police Service

  • Saskatchewan RCMP officers issued over 2,000 roadside charges during Canada Road Safety Week. May 17 to 23 was Canada Road Safety Week. Saskatchewan RCMP officers worked alongside municipal police partners and agencies as increased patrols and check stops were set up across the province, with enforcement focussing on impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and seat belt enforcement just to name a few. During the week, Saskatchewan RCMP officers made contact with 3,889 drivers and over 2,000 charges were laid, some of which include: 37 charges laid in respect to alcohol impairment; 1 charge laid in respect to drug impairment; 1,225 charges laid in respect to speeding/aggressive driving; 94 charges laid in respect to distracted driving, including use of electronic devices; and 64 charges laid for seatbelt violations. In addition to the above charges, 2,500 warnings were issued.

Investigative Recap

  • May 30: At approximately 3 p.m., Broadview RCMP located a male wanted on warrant in relation to a May 22, 2022 firearms discharge incident on Cowessess First Nation. No injuries were reported during the incident. The male ran from officers into the bush. RCMP officers from the Broadview, Melville, Esterhazy areas, as well as Yorkton Police Dog Services searched for the male, who was later located hiding in a clothes dryer in the basement of a residence on Cowessess First Nation. Andy Tanner of Cowessess First Nation was arrested on the warrant and also charged with two counts, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, Section 88(2), Criminal Code. He will appear in court in Broadview on June 22, 2022.
  • May 31: At approximately 3:45 p.m., Black Lake RCMP received a report of a snowmobiler who had fallen through the ice. The snowmobiler was located in the water a short time later and was pronounced deceased at the scene. He has been identified as a 36-year-old male from the area. His family has been notified.
  • May 31: Dillon RCMP received a report of shots fired at a residence on Buffalo River Dene Nation. Officers attended and located evidence of the residence being shot at. It was determined one bullet entered the residence. No injuries were reported.

Two vehicles – a black SUV and a gold car – were determined to be associated in the incident. RCMP officers conducted patrols in St. Georges Hill, Michel Village and Buffalo River Dene Nation. The SUV was located stuck and abandoned on a rural road in the Buffalo River Dene Nation area. The car was located unoccupied at a residence in the same community. A female was arrested outside this residence without incident. Two males exited a shed on the property and were arrested without incident. One of the males, Ashton Piche from Dillon was determined to have an outstanding warrant out of Dillon for aggravated assault.

As a result of continued investigation, Rory Bhyette from Dillon and Jim Lakato from Saskatoon are charged with: one count, discharge firearm with intent, Section 244, Criminal Code; one count, unauthorized possession of a firearm/restricted weapon, Section 91(3), Criminal Code; and one count, mischief under $5000 Section 430(4) of the Criminal Code. They will next appear in Dillon Provincial Court on June 15, 2022.

  • June 2: Around 6:20 a.m., La Ronge RCMP responded to a report of a vehicle driving erratically on the Far Reserve of the ac La Ronge Indian Band. Officers located the vehicle and activated their emergency equipment and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle did not stop. Officers then located it and attempted another traffic stop, but the vehicle backed up and collided with a police vehicle before driving away. The vehicle was later stopped on Highway #2, after colliding with two additional police vehicles. The female youth driver, who can't be named as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was arrested and charged with: three counts, assaulting a police officer with a weapon, Sec 270.01(1), Criminal Code; one count, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, Sec. 320.13(1), Criminal Code; one count, flight from a police officer, Section 320.17, Criminal Code; and one count, fail to stop after accident, Section 320.16(1), Criminal Code. The youth will appear in La Ronge Youth Court on July 18, 2022 at 1:30 pm.
  • June 2: shortly before 2:00 p.m. Pinehouse RCMP received a report of a single motorcycle collision approximately twenty minutes south of Pinehouse on Highway #914. The lone, adult male driver of the motorcycle, from Ontario, was transported to hospital where he passed away. Investigation into the incident is ongoing. Alcohol is not considered a factor.
  • June 3: Saskatchewan RCMP respond to firearms discharge in residential area on Cumberland House Cree Nation
  • June 4: On May 29, 2022, Cumberland House RCMP received a report of an injured woman, who was later pronounced deceased. As a result of investigation by Saskatchewan RCMP's Major Crime Unit, Alvin Thomas of Cumberland House has been charged with one count, second degree murder, Section 235(1), Criminal Code in relation to the death of 24-year-old Marisha Hoksbergen from Cumberland House and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was located and arrested in Prince Albert on June 4. He will appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court on June 6, 2022.
  • June 5: At approximately 2:50 p.m., Prince Albert RCMP received a report of a collision on Highway #2, just south of Prince Albert. Investigation has determined a pick-up truck and a motorcycle collided. The motorcycle driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The pick-up driver was not injured. The investigation continues.

La Ronge RCMP seeks information on theft of narcotics, money from La Ronge business. On April 19, 2022 at approximately 6:10 a.m., La Ronge RCMP received a report of a theft at a business on the 800 block of La Ronge Avenue in La Ronge. Investigation determined that earlier that morning, two males entered the business and took a quantity of narcotics and money. La Ronge RCMP has been investigating this theft since and is now asking the public for information. Security video of the theft is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzG1QSiSV3s. Maidstone RCMP asks for public assistance in fuel theft investigation. Around 1:00 a.m. Maidstone RCMP responded to a report of a theft of fuel at the RM of Britannia utility shop in Hillmond, Saskatchewan. Police are seeking information to assist in identifying the involved individuals and locating the vehicle.

Outlook RCMP recover stolen property, charge male after officer observes him speeding. On May 21, 2022 at approximately 1:20 p.m., an Outlook RCMP officer doing traffic patrols located a vehicle travelling 46 km/hr over the posted limit on Highway #19. The officer activated their emergency lights, but the vehicle did not stop. The vehicle was located parked in a campground. Investigation determined the vehicle was reported stolen from Winnipeg and an adult male was arrested. Officers also located and seized a firearm, ammunition, identification and credit cards that did not belong to the male, bear spray, a large amount of tools and a small amount of crystal meth.

As a result, Ian Langridge from St. Norbert, MB was charged with one count, operation of a conveyance while prohibited, Section 320.18, Criminal Code; 1 count, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, Section 354(1)(a), Criminal Code; 1 count, fail to comply with probation order, Section 733.1(1), Criminal Code; 1 count, unauthorized possession of a firearm, Section 91(3), Criminal Code; 1 count, possession of a firearm when knowing possession unauthorized, Section 92(3)(a), Criminal Code; 1 count, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, Section 94(2), Criminal Code; 1 count, unsafe storage of a firearm, Section 86(2), Criminal Code, 1 count possession, Section 4(1), Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. He also received a speeding ticket. He will appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court on June 9.

"This is an excellent example of proactive police work by our officer," says Sgt. Mark Langager of the Outlook RCMP. "They were conducting traffic patrol and located a speeding vehicle – which resulted in the seizure of a firearm and illicit drugs. Plus, some of the items recovered were able to be returned to the residents they'd been stolen from."

North Battleford arrests male on outstanding warrants, weapons and possession charges. North Battleford RCMP responded to a report of a male who appeared to be intoxicated throwing milk in the street on the 900 block of 110th Street in North Battleford shortly after 6:30 p.m. The male was located and found to have warrants out of Alberta and British Columbia. A search of the person found a small amount of suspected methamphetamine and a knife. A 34-year-old male from Lloydminster is facing one count, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, Section 88, Criminal Code, one count, carrying a concealed weapon, Section 90(2), Criminal Code, one count, resisting arrest, Section 129(a), Criminal Code and two counts, possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, Section 5(1), Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Two March arsons under investigation by Rose Valley RCMP. Rose Valley RCMP are looking for any information that can help identify the suspect(s) of two arsons that occurred on the morning of March 29, 2022 in the town of Rose Valley. At approximately 5:30 a.m. Rose Valley Fire Department responded to two separate fires, both abandoned structures. One of the structures was an abandoned former grocery store, while the other was an abandoned residence. Both structures were fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported. Rose Valley RCMP is looking for any information that can assist with furthering this ongoing investigation. Melfort RCMP lays charges after investigation into reports of vehicle thefts. Over the past few months, several vehicles have been reported stolen in and around the Melfort area. As a result of continued investigation by Melfort RCMP, Danika Simon from Melfort was arrested on May 26 and has been charged with: four counts, possession of stolen property over $5000, Section 354(1)(a), Criminal Code; one count, impaired (by drug) operation of a motor vehicle, Section 320.14(1)(a), Criminal Code; and three counts, fail to comply with release order condition, Section 145(5)(a), Criminal Code.
