Saskatchewan RCMP – Your Provincial Police Service
Each year, the Saskatchewan RCMP receives reports of firearms, ammunition and other related items stolen from vehicles during hunting season. Over the long weekend, a theft of a firearm was reported in northeastern Saskatchewan and a theft of hunting equipment was reported in Yorkton, both from unoccupied vehicles.
The Saskatchewan RCMP recommends hunters take the following precautions:
- Don't leave firearms unattended in a vehicle, especially overnight. Even if they are out of sight within the vehicle, other hunting equipment can signal the potential presence of a firearm and a thief may be willing to smash a window to find out.
- Only bring as many firearms as you are willing to carry with you to hunt.
- Always use trigger locks and secure firearms cases.
- Remember, it is illegal to have a loaded firearm in a vehicle.
