News release

Twillingate RCMP conducted two separate traffic stops on July 8, 2022, with youth operating off-road vehicles while unsupervised. Parents of the three youth were issued tickets for offences under the Off-Road Vehicles Act.

At approximately 1:40 p.m. on Friday, police stopped two dirt bikes driving on Route 344 between Summerford and Cottlesville travelling at 50 km/h on the road. Parents of the 11-year-old and 14-year-old operators were issued tickets for permitting the youth to operate an off-road vehicle without supervision.

Later that afternoon, at approximately 2:15 p.m., the same officer stopped another dirt bike travelling at 76 km/h on Main Street in Summerford. A parent of the 13-year-old operator was issued a ticket for permitting the youth to operate an off-road vehicle without supervision.

RCMP NL reminds the public of recent increased supervision requirements under the Off-Road Vehicles Act. Under 16 years of age, operators must be properly supervised by a licenced driver who is at least 18 years old. A supervisor has to see and be seen at all times and be able to provide immediate direction to the operator.

RCMP NL continues to fulfill its mandate to protect public safety, enforce the law, and ensure the delivery of priority policing services in Newfoundland and Labrador.
