Woman charged with arson and assault of police officer in Stephenville

Twenty-nine-year-old Kayla Rose-Leader is charged with arson and assault stemming from an incident that happened in Stephenville on July 23, 2022.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Bay St. George RCMP received a report of smoke coming from an apartment building in Stephenville. Police attended the scene, along with the Stephenville Fire Department. A fire that was intentionally set was discovered in a storage area in the basement of the building. All tenants were evacuated without injuries and without damage to their homes or belongings.

Rose-Leader was arrested at the scene and was transported to the detachment. While in police custody she assaulted a police officer.

She is charged with a number of criminal offences including:

  • Arson - damage to property
  • Arson - disregard for human life
  • Assaulting a police officer
  • Failing to comply with conditions of a release order – three counts

Rose-Leader attended court on Monday and was remanded in custody. Her next court date is July 28, 2022, in Stephenville Provincial Court
