Yellowknife RCMP respond to forced entry of multiple community mailboxes

October 18, 2022
Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

News release

Yellowknife Detachment is currently investigating forced entry to a number of community mailboxes in the City of Yellowknife. Over the last three weeks, police have received multiple reports community mailboxes have been entered. Based on information gathered, as many as 137 individual mailboxes and parcel slots may have been entered with force.

Police are asking anyone who believes they have had any mail or parcels stolen from their mailbox to contact the detachment and report to Canada Post.

As the holiday season approaches, an influx in residential mail and parcel deliveries is expected. Unsecure parcels left outside a residence are tempting targets for thieves. Residents are encouraged to check their mailboxes daily and to use tracking applications or pick-up delivery options to minimize any risk that their parcels may go missing. Also, as always, it may be invaluable and prudent to report any suspicious activity around either your residence or other residences within your neighbourhood so the police can be dispatched and patrol.

Anyone who has information about these entries, or who possesses video surveillance that may serve to identify potential suspects, is asked to contact Yellowknife Detachment at 669-1111 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.nwtnu.crimestoppersweb.com. In the event of an emergency call, 911.
