News release

As a result of two reports of dangerous driving on the Trans Canada Highway (TCH) and a snowmobile crash on a pond near Deep Bight, Clarenville RCMP arrested three men over this past weekend for impaired driving.

Following a report received early afternoon on Saturday, February 25, of a pickup truck swerving in traffic eastbound on the TCH towards Clarenville, police located the described vehicle. The driver, a 47-year-old man, failed a roadside breath test and was arrested for impaired driving. His vehicle was impounded and his license suspended – he will appear in court at a later date.

Just before 4:00 p.m. that same afternoon, Clarenville RCMP received a report of a transport truck driving erratically and swerving on the TCH. Police located the vehicle, conducted a traffic stop and observed open alcohol in the vehicle. A roadside breath test was administered, which the 72-year-old driver failed. He was arrested for impaired driving, brought to hospital for medical concerns and further samples were obtained. This incident is still under investigation.

On Sunday afternoon, February 26, around 2:00 p.m., Clarenville RCMP received a report of a snowmobile crash on Loon Pond, near Deep Bight. The driver of the snowmobile, a 43-year-old man, was escorted to ambulance by the Triple Bay Eagles Ground Search and Rescue. He was treated on location by paramedics and, once medically cleared to be assessed for suspected impairment, he failed a road side breath test. The man was taken to hospital in Clarenville for medical assessment and further samples were obtained. This incident is also still under investigation.

RCMP NL thanks those who report suspected impaired drivers and continues to fulfill its mandate to protect public safety, enforce the law, and ensure the delivery of priority policing services in Newfoundland and Labrador.
