News release

Halifax District RCMP is investigating a sudden death following an incident in Cole Harbour.

Yesterday, at approximately 7 p.m., Halifax District RCMP received a report of a distressed man at a home on Greenborough Crescent in Cole Harbour. RCMP officers learned that a 52-year-old Cole Harbour man armed himself with a knife, while in the presence of a woman and a youth known to him, and was threatening to harm himself. The youth and the woman were not physically injured.

Just before officers arrived at the home, the armed man left the residence on foot with what are believed to be self-inflicted wounds. RCMP officers, assisted by the Halifax Regional Police Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Services, began searching the area for the man.

A short time later, officers received a report of a break and enter that occurred at a residence nearby. Officers believe the man was involved in the break and enter.

An emergency alert was issued to the Halifax Regional Municipality to advise residents in the area to shelter in place and call 911 to report suspicious activity.

At approximately 9:30 p.m., officers located the man on a nearby frozen lake and began providing first aid. The man, who was suffering from exposure and self-inflicted wounds was transported to hospital by EHS.

Shortly after midnight, this morning, Halifax District RCMP was notified that the man had succumbed to his injuries.

"My heart goes out to the man's family at this difficult time, along with our officers and first responders who worked as quickly as possible under challenging circumstances to locate the man safely," says Chief Superintendent Jeffrey Christie, Officer in Charge of Halifax District RCMP.

The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner's Office.
