Thanks to the actions of a cabin owner, Keegan Seymour and another man, both age 24 and of St. John's, were arrested by Holyrood RCMP yesterday for a break and enter into a cabin in Middle Gull Pond.
Shortly before 2:00 p.m., police received a report from a cabin owner of a recent break and enter. Footprints were observed in the snow and a door of the cabin had been forced open. A number of items were taken from inside the property. Some of the items were laid outside, likely to be picked up by the culprits.
While responding, police received an update from the cabin owner who was following a suspicious all-terrain vehicle (ATV) that drove by the property and refused to stop when flagged down. Police continued communication with the cabin owner while enroute, set up a road block and stopped the ATV. The two occupants of the ATV were found in possession of stolen property and were arrested. Seymour, who is currently before the court on a number of criminal charges, was held in custody, attended court today and was remanded for a further appearance tomorrow. He is charged with break and enter and possession of property obtained by crime.
In addition to being found in possession of stolen property, the other man, who was operating the ATV, showed signs of drug impairment. He was transported to the detachment where a drug influence evaluation was completed. Officers await the results of the testing to determine if charges of impaired driving are appropriate. The man's licence was suspended and the ATV was seized and impounded. He was released from custody and is set to attend court at a later date to answer to charges of possession of property obtained by crime and break and enter. The individual's name cannot be released until charges are sworn.
Continuing the investigation, police suspected property from this break and enter was being stored in a nearby cabin. A consensual search of that cabin was granted by the owner. Two stolen long gun firearms were recovered.
The investigation is continuing with further charges anticipated.
Property owners in the Middle Gull Pond area are encouraged to check on their properties, review available surveillance and to report any criminal activities to Holyrood RCMP (709-229-3892).
