Unruly airline passenger’s actions forces emergency landing in Happy Valley-Goose Bay

Happy Valley-Goose Bay RCMP arrested 41-year-old Joao Pedro Hendriques Mota Calado yesterday after an International Delta Airlines flight conducted an emergency landing in the town.

Shortly before 4:00 p.m., police received the report indicating that a passenger on the flight, which originated in Amsterdam and was destined for Detroit, was intoxicated and was causing a disturbance on the plane. The man had allegedly assaulted a number of flight attendants and uttered threats towards some of the crew and any law enforcement officers who may board the plane.

Once the plane touched down, officers entered the aircraft and arrested the individual without further incident. He spent the night in police custody, attends court today in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and is charged with the following criminal offences:

  • Assault
  • Mischief over $5000.00
  • Uttering Threats

He is also facing charges under the Aeronautics Act.

No one was injured during the incident and after removal of the unruly passenger, the flight departed Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
