The Whitehorse RCMP Detachment General Investigation Section (GIS) maintains the active investigation into the allegations of the use of excessive force and isolation spaces at Jack Hulland Elementary School in Whitehorse.
Police first became aware of these allegations in November 2021. An investigation was launched immediately with the Whitehorse RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) as the lead. Police have pursued a variety of investigative pathways, including reviewing documentation related to Department of Education policy and procedures, and speaking with witnesses.
The investigation has been active for over a year during which time people from both inside and outside Yukon have continued to contact police. GIS investigators, assisted by other police resources as required, have interviewed or spoken with over 150 witnesses, and reviewed many hundreds of documents from Jack Hulland Elementary School and the Department of Education. The Whitehorse RCMP remain committed to completing a thorough and impartial investigation. The investigation is progressing well, and the RCMP plans to provide another update on the status of the investigation by the end of April 2023.
Police continue to be limited about the scale and scope of information that can be released to the public, as this is an active investigation. Further details may be made available when appropriate.
Investigators continue to request that any teachers, staff, or parents who have information about these allegations and have not previously spoken to police to contact the Whitehorse RCMP GIS at 867-667-5551.
The Jack Hulland Elementary School community was updated by means of a letter distributed through the school's communication channels on Thursday, January 19, 2023.
