Year in Review Report 2020/2021

Introduction by the Commanding Officer of the Manitoba RCMP

Assistant Commissioner Jane MacLatchy
Commanding Officer, Manitoba RCMP

To say that 2020 was an unprecedented year would be an understatement. The emergence and spread of COVID-19 continues to affect every facet of our daily lives and has changed how organizations, including the Manitoba RCMP, carry out their work and interact with the public.

Despite all the uncertainty and fear of the unknown, the nearly 1400 employees of the Manitoba RCMP demonstrated their dedication and commitment to the security and safety of Manitobans. We bolstered our supply of PPE and followed provincial public health recommendations to ensure our officers could safely patrol communities, respond to calls and continue to investigate criminal activity across the province. On top of these duties, COVID-19 enforcement was an additional responsibility for our officers this year – nearly 8000 calls for service were solely related to the enforcement of COVID-19 public health requirements.

During this global pandemic, strong partnerships and community support was paramount for us to carry out our policing mandate. As several First Nations communities began to see sharp increases in COVID-19 cases, the arrival of Canadian Armed Forces personnel was critical in keeping these communities safe.

As vaccine roll-outs began in First Nations communities, leaders from many of them facilitated getting essential workers, including RCMP officers, vaccinated after community residents were immunized. Without these partnerships and community support, it would have been much more difficult to provide critical policing services to communities across the province.

Our commitment to reconciliation continues to be a top priority. Over the past three years, we met with many leaders and community members from Indigenous communities across Manitoba. We sought their insights and recommendations on what the Manitoba RCMP could do to engage in meaningful reconciliation. The Manitoba RCMP Reconciliation Story is based on the feedback and wisdom we heard from these meetings. It is a living document that will evolve with continuous dialogue and collaboration with the Indigenous Peoples in Manitoba, and it will serve as our guide as we continue the journey towards reconciliation.

The work outlined in the Year in Review highlights just a small sample of the incredible accomplishments of our employees across Manitoba. We are proud to be Manitoba's provincial police force and we look forward to continuing to serve and protect all Manitobans.
