A Cape Dorset man who was arrested in connection to a shooting incident that occurred in the community on April 25, 2020 has now been formally charged.
28-year-old Paul Etungat of Cape Dorset, NU is facing multiple criminal charges after the community was placed in temporary lock down after shots were fired.
V Division Containment Team and V Division Crisis Negotiators flew into the community to assist Cape Dorset RCMP. After several hours of negotiations, Etungat surrendered and was taken into Police custody without incident.
Etungat is charged with:
- Discharging a firearm recklessly – Section 244.2(3) CC
- Sexual assault with a weapon – Section 272(2) CC
- Aggravated Assault – Section 268 CC
- Sexual Assault – Section 271 CC
- Possession of weapon dangerous to the public – Section 88(2)
- Unauthorized possession of firearm – Section 91(3) CC
- Use of firearm in commission of offence – Section 85(1)(a) CC
- Assault – Section 266 CC
- Assault with a weapon – Section 267(a) CC
- Careless use of a firearm – Section 86(1) CC (X2)
- Pointing a firearm – Section 87(2) (X2)
- Uttering threats – Section 264.1(1)(a) CC (X2)
- Forcible confinement – Section 279(2) CC (X2)
He appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded into custody. His next scheduled court appearance is June 2, 2020 at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit, NU.
