March 9, 2023
Fredericton, New Brunswick

Statement

The New Brunswick RCMP would like to address a charge that has been laid by the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team against an RCMP police officer.

This is a very serious allegation, and the New Brunswick RCMP is treating it as such. From the outset, the New Brunswick RCMP has been fully cooperating with the investigation by the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT), which is in relation to police actions during the transportation of an individual in custody.

As a result of the SiRT investigation that was initiated on July 29, 2022, the member in question was placed on administrative duties, effective August 4, 2022. As the employer, the RCMP will proceed with appropriate actions pending the outcome of the legal proceedings.

RCMP members are expected to hold themselves to a high moral and professional standard. We understand and respect the impact it can have on public trust when there is any allegation that a member has not met the standard that our communities deserve. We will continue to support any further investigation and the ongoing criminal proceedings, in order to ensure full accountability and transparency to the people of New Brunswick.

The New Brunswick RCMP will not be able to comment further on the charge due to the independent nature of the SiRT investigation, and the ongoing criminal proceedings.
