News release

Pictou County District RCMP has charged a man who was involved in a break-in in Abercrombie and fled from a traffic stop on Hwy. 104 in James River.

On January 19, 2023, at approximately 7:35 p.m., Pictou County District RCMP responded to a report of a break-in at a home on Granton Abercrombie Rd. in Abercrombie. RCMP officers learned that at approximately 6:30 p.m. a man broke-into the home and drove away in a black Volkswagen Beetle that had been stored in the garage on the property.

At approximately the same time, an RCMP Northeast Traffic Services member located the vehicle travelling on Hwy. 104 near James River. A traffic stop was initiated and while the vehicle initially pulled over, it fled prior to the RCMP officer being able to speak with the occupants. A second RCMP Northeast Traffic Services member located the vehicle on Hwy. 104 near exit 31 in Addington Forks. A traffic stop was initiated and the driver refused to stop. The vehicle was followed where it exited Hwy. 104 at exit 33 in Beech Hill. The vehicle continued on Beech Hill Rd. and began to slow down, as it appeared it was suffering from mechanical issues. By this time an RCMP Police Dog Service team had arrived in the area and the vehicle was successfully disabled by the RCMP Police Dog Service team. The driver of the vehicle, a 45-year-old Sydney Mines man, was safely arrested.

The man was displaying signs of impairment and provided a sample of breath into an Approved Screening Device, which resulted in a "fail". The man was transported to the Antigonish RCMP Detachment where he provided samples of breath that were more than twice the legal limits. The man was then transported to Pictou County District RCMP cells and was held in custody overnight.

Kevin Walters, 45, of Sydney Mines, has been charged with Break, Enter and Commit. He appeared in Pictou Provincial Court earlier today and was remanded into custody. Walters will return to Pictou Provincial Court on January 24, 2023 at 9:30 a.m.

Charges of Flight from Police, Impaired Operation of a Conveyance and Impaired Operation of a Conveyance equal to, or more than, 80mg%, will be laid at a later date.

The investigations are continuing.
