New Glasgow, Prince Edward Island

News release

Prince District RCMP has charged a 41-year-old man from Enmore for attempted theft of a vehicle and break and enter.

On January 7, 2023, at approximately 11:00 a.m., members of the Prince District RCMP received a complaint from a witness who saw a truck at a property in Victoria that did not belong there. The driver fled the scene after being confronted and approximately an hour later another witness recognized the suspect from earlier in the day, and called police. The driver of the truck pulled away from the witness driving in a dangerous manner and a short time later Queens District RCMP located the truck in a ditch on Myers Road in New Glasgow.

The RCMP Police Dog Service was able to track the driver who had fled on foot and the suspect was arrested. Police determined that the truck was stolen earlier in the week from Kensington.

Matthew French of Enmore has been charged with:

  • Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance;
  • Attempted Theft of a Motor Vehicle;
  • Break and Enter;
  • Failure to Comply with a Probation Order (multiple counts)

French was also being sought by police on several other matters at the time and has been charged with the following, from unrelated investigations:

  • Flight from Police;
  • Fraud;
  • Theft of a Motor Vehicle;
  • Failure to Comply with a Probation Order (multiple counts)

French will appear in Charlottetown Provincial Court on January 10 at 11:00 a.m.

The Prince District RCMP, Queens District RCMP, RCMP Police Dog Service, RCMP Forensic Identification Service and Kensinton Police all contributed in this investigation.

The investigation is ongoing.
