Building on fire

On February 11, 2023, at approximately 2:20 pm, Thompson Rural RCMP received a report of an apartment building on fire in Tetaskwayak Cree Nation. First Nation Safety Officers and firefighters from neighbouring communities ensured the building was evacuated.

A 17-year-old female risked her life and saved children from an upstairs apartment. As she was saving the last child, a two-year-old boy, she lost consciousness due to smoke inhalation. Both the female and the young child were rescued by firefighters. Both youth were transported to hospital, where they remain in stable, but critical condition.

The Office of the Fire Commissioner attended the scene. The cause of the fire is not yet determined. The investigation continues.
