The Victoria Day long weekend is upon us. As Yukoners gear up to enjoy their time off, Yukon RCMP would like to bring up some important safety tips:

Non-motorized road users

Yukon RCMP have seen greater non-motorized road use due to COVID-19. We don't have as much commuter traffic or as many outside travelers on our roadways, but we now have groups of cyclists, children and people practicing physical distancing out during mid-morning and early afternoon.

Extra vigilance is required on the part of motorists during these times, and some extra patience goes a long way too! People practicing physical distancing may take some extra time at crosswalks, and increased foot traffic will require more stops.

With campgrounds being closed this long weekend, please keep this in mind and expect to see a greater number of non-motorized road users staying close-to-home and enjoying the outdoors.

Rules of the road still apply

In spite of some restrictions imposed on all of us due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the rules of the road are still in effect 24/7. Reduced vehicle traffic on roadways is not a license to disregard posted speed limits and other traffic laws.

Statistically speaking, the likelihood of being involved in a tragic collision greatly increases if impaired driving is involved. Please plan ahead and celebrate responsibly. If your long weekend activities involve alcohol, plan ahead for a safe ride home. Arrange a designated driver, call a taxi or take transit.

If you witness a suspected impaired driver, pull over when safe to do so and call police immediately. Try and provide as much information about the vehicle, driver, and vehicle direction of travel and what activity you observed.

Some more safety tips:

  • Always buckle up
  • Slow down
  • Don't text and drive
  • Don't drink and drive
  • Watch out for pedestrians

As always, enjoy the long weekend and the start of Yukon summer in a safe, responsible way.
