Alberta RCMP officer involved shooting in Strathcona County – Update

New Sarepta, Alta. - On Oct. 10, 2022, at 3:11 a.m., Strathcona County RCMP were involved in an officer involved shooting with the occupants of a white BMW on Highway 16. After the shooting, the occupants fled the area in the vehicle.

On Oct. 10, 2022, at 5:23 p.m., RCMP received a report of a white BMW driving erratically on Highway 21 near New Sarepta. Strathcona RCMP located the vehicle in the ditch with two civilians assisting a lone occupant. The occupant was approached by officers, and an altercation occurred where officers discharged their firearms, and the male suspect was shot. Medical assistance was provided by officers; however, the 30-year-old male suspect died as a result of his injuries. A non-police firearm was located on scene. No officers were injured during this incident.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating whether this incident is related to the officer involved shooting that occurred on Highway 16 earlier in the day.

ASIRT has taken over carriage of both investigations into the circumstances of the officer involved shootings.

The Alberta RCMP believes in processes that seek the facts and it's important that processes taken to assess the actions of all those involved, including the police, are fair, transparent, and defendable. This is why, as soon as we became aware of these incidents, we immediately notified the Director of Law Enforcement and initiated our internal review process.

Independent of ASIRT's investigation, the Alberta RCMP's internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during these incidents. RCMP training, policy, police response, and the duty status of the members involved will be subject to review. The Alberta RCMP is, of course, fully cooperating with ASIRT and will not be commenting further on this incident. All media inquiries about this incident should now be directed to ASIRT at 780-641-9099.
